PROJECT ABSTRACT – FRESH PRODUCE RECOVERY PROGRAM

The Fresh Produce Recovery Project, in partnership with the Indian Food Banking Network, is designed to reduce food wastage and enhance nutrition security for vulnerable communities. By rescuing fresh fruits and vegetables that would otherwise go to waste, this initiative ensures that nutritious fresh produce reaches those in need, who are struggling to receive it regularly.

This initiative supports SDG Goal 2: Zero Hunger, SDG 12: Responsible Consumption, SDG 13: Climate Action and SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals

Our Objectives Are:

  • Reduce Food Waste: Prevent the wastage of surplus fruits and vegetables that are often discarded due to excess production or cosmetic imperfections.
  • Enhance Nutrition Security: Provide fresh, nutritious produce to vulnerable populations, helping to address malnutrition and dietary deficiencies.
  • Promote Environmental Sustainability: Minimize greenhouse gas emissions from food waste and promote environment friendly food recovery practices.
  • Strengthen Community Health: Ensure access to healthy, fresh food for marginalized communities, improving their overall health and well-being.

Process:

The project works by identifying surplus, consumable produce from wholesale markets, retail outlets, farmer producer organizations (FPOs), and individual farmers. These items, which are often discarded due to minor imperfections or overproduction, are collected and transported to our food bank. After a thorough sorting and safety check, the fresh produce is distributed to vulnerable communities through a network of NGOs, and shelters. This process helps mitigate food waste, provides essential nutrients to those in need, and promotes healthier eating habits in underserved areas.
